Great Bromley and District Cricket Club Saturday XI v Achilles on Sat 01 Aug 2009 at 1pm
Match was Abandoned
Match report
The weather was the winner in this eagerly awaited return match between the top two sides in Division 6. The forecast had threatened rain long before it eventually arrived and it is Bromley who would have been more relieved when it did finally call a halt to this game. For once Bromley were not able to bat the opposition out of the game upon winning the toss though they did get off to their customary good start. Liam and Craig put on 87 for the first wicket in 15 overs and gave a sturdy base on which to build. Craigs innings of 37 was significant for the fact it took him past the league record for runs scored in a season and with 6 games to come he may well set a record that is hard to overcome. This though was not one of his or Liams more fluent knocks, both Rouse and the confident Knight troubled them with Rouse being unfortunate to only end with the one wicket, his full toss accounting for Craig who mistimed it to cover. Liam also slapped a ball to cover and when Louis departed, Caught behind off a gossimer edge Bromley had slumped to 100-3.`One shot wonder` Pip was to quickly follow when he was yorked by Knight and Jake, Jordan and Matt Wareing all failed to trouble the scorers thus contributinng to a middle order slump of England 90s style. Rich stood firm amongst the chaos around him, YES Rich stood firm, at last having a touch of good fortune along with some impressive shots to complete a hugely popular half century. When he holed out in the deep off Wignall the Bromley innings crumbled again to end on a dissapointing 177. Work required by the bowlers to pull this one off.
Big Harry and Liam opened the bowling and Harry immediately troubled Mohan With his pace and bounce, Mohan looked like he might require a rope to accompany his skipping!! After surviving a double hit which should have taken his wicket he was comprehensively bowled next ball up to end his torture. Experienced opener Green was joined by Wright and they looked relitively untroubled until Matt Wareing produced a snorter to Remove the dangerous Green with the score on 85. With Harry, Liam and Matt finishing their spells Nick was brought on and instantly took 2 wickets in his first over to even the game up once again just as the first heavy rains fell. A break was taken and Achilles were 115-5, anyones game. Skipper Stockley who appeared to have an injured his right arm whilst umpiring added 40 runs with the effective Wright before falling to a test match dismissal. Harry produced a a quick lifting ball which took the outside edge of Stockleys bat and looked to be flying to the boundary only for Rich to take a breathtaking catch. Game on again. No8 Bowdler entered in the dark and gloom and edged Achilles towards victory only for the heavens to open and spoil what would have been a tense finish, Dissapointment for the visitors who were only 11 short of their target but Bromley also felt they were in with a shout before common sense prevailed and the game ended between two sides who will hopefully meet again in Division 5 next season.
