Great Bromley and District Cricket Club Saturday XI v Elmstead II on Sat 18 Jul 2009 at 1pm

Match report
Gt Bromley sampled the bitter taste of defeat for the first time since May 16th when Elmstead 2s ran out the comfortable winners in this top of the table clash.
With Louis still away, Liam once again stood in and once again lost the toss proving once and for all that Louis is the king of tossers!
With heavy rain on the two previous days it was a `no brainer` that Elmstead decided to field first on a green wicket. In the time it took Nick to pop home and collect the scorebook (doh) Bromley were already a wicket down. Rich proving that when you`re in a rut, bad luck follows you. This time he middled a ball cleanly into the hands of Mid off. 1 for 1. It soon became 2 for 2 as Jake played his favourite out shot to a grateful Stubbins. Jordan and Liam had to rebuild and this they did although Jordan had just a little fortune, being dropped no less than 7 times! 3 in one over from Green all to the hapless Matt `teflon` Street at first slip. He was promptly removed and two overs later Jordan kindly gave him another chance at cover, guess what happened?? Green had turned Green, Jordan seemed to find this all very amusing. He did though have the good manners not to get to fifty and have the embarrasment of being clapped!
He and Liam had put on 109 for the third wicket. As is usually the case, when one fell the other followed, Liam, who had played a restrained, chanceless innings smashed a ball to mid-wicket and Cocker took a good catch, if only Street was fielding there! With less than 15 overs left Bromley needed to push on but Green and Cocker were keeping it tight and runs came too slowly, Matt Foley tried to accelerate but hit a steepler which Sparrow `nest`led on to.Andy attempted a suicidal run and was sent back but with a turning circle of a double-decker he was stranded. Nick and Matt did manage a couple of late boundries to propel the score to 169-7. It didnt seem far short of par on this wicket but was to prove wholly inadequate.
After the delights of Mrs Holymans tasty tarts, Billy opened the bowling with the skipper and he would need to repeat last weeks heroics to give Bromley a chance. When he had Gregory caught behind for 3 it was just the start we needed and Street was soon to follow for 15 not before had smashed a huge straight 6.At 30-2 in the 11th over maybe it would be close but Collen and Sarsby batted sensibly waiting for anything loose to attack but never taking the aerial route. Matt(s) Wareing and Halsey were tried and both bowled tidily. Nick was tried, not so tidy! Throwing on the leg spin of Jake was the last chance but despite bowling a couple of rippers it was not to be and Bromley can take this as a lesson that nothing but full commitment will secure the top stop they so dearly cherish. Bromley will welcome back their skipper and his more talented (only joking) brother Craig for the trip to Melton Next Saturday.
