Match report East Bergholt II v Gt Bromley Two Counties Division 6. May 4th 09

East Bergholt 299-6 beat Gt Bromley 258-8 by 44 runs

`You`ve been framed`! Bromley certainly thought they had, as experienced Campaigner Doug Frame took the opportunity to drop down to the East Bergholt 2nd team in an attempt to spend some time in the middle, And that he did. The mainstay of the Bergholt innings, he was really opening his shoulders when he missed one from Jake Foley and was easily stumped by Craig. Earlier Paul Gaffney bowled a quick and accurate opening spell and was unfortunate not to take a wicket or two, this was also the case for Nick Holyman who felt most aggrieved not to get the wicket of Frame`s opening partner Cupid who led a charmed life on the way to his 53. When Frame was out for 143 the score was 223 and with a dozen overs to go, Bromley were looking down the barrel of a total well in excess of 300.Fortunately, where Nick and Paul had been without any luck, Matt Foley enjoyed plenty! He took 3 wickets, all caught in the deep and did enough to restrict Bergholts final total to 299.Bromley will look back at some poor fielding and missed opportunities which may have given Bergholt 30 more runs than should have been, Never the less they still felt confident of chasing down the total given the 382 they had totalled 2 days earlier.
Craig and Jake made a cautious opening against some decent bowling from Neil Fosters boys Henry and Sam but when Ashfield was introduced they really tucked in. When he was withdrawn after only 2 overs the initiative was moving towards Bromley. Jake was finding runs in the most inventive ways showing a wide range of shots for one so young! Bromley duly recorded their third successive century opening stand. The Bergholt captain then introduced Munson And Frame to take the pace off the ball. This was to be an inspired decision as Foley holed out in the deep and was soon followed by Perrin who edged behind. Bromley needed to rebuild quickly but captain Louis top edged a hook and Rich Lawson was bowled to give Frame his third wicket. Liam and Matt Foley refused to give up the ghost and even when the vice skipper was bowled, Paul Gaffney hit some lusty blows to defy his shoulder injury and keep Bromley in with an outside chance of winning the game. In was not to be though and when Matt was 8th out Nick And young Jack Edwards saw off the last couple of overs to prevent Bergholt collecting maximum points. A good effort but 44 runs short and maybe just maybe if we had fielded better…
