Chappel & Wakes Colne v Great Bromley and District Cricket Club Sunday XI on Sun 23 Aug 2009 at 1pm
Great Bromley and District Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets

Match report The away game to Chappel was one both teams would fancy winning as only one place separates the teams in the league. However, thoughts were elsewhere as Chappel's groundsman sadly passed away three days earlier. A two minute silence was held before the game in memory of Ted Wackett.

The game started with Chappel batting having won the toss. Paul bowled his usual firery opening burst and was rewarded with 3 wickets in his first 4 overs. Matt was tidy at the other end and deserved a wicket but Louis dropped a simple catch in the covers. At 18-3 Bromley were on top but a partnership of 100 between C Carter and TJ Venter brought Chappel back into the game. With the seamers proving ineffective spin was introduced and the breakthrough was achieved. Matt Pirie removing Venter for 30. 118-4 soon became 145-8 as Jake dismissed Carter for an excellent 72 and then bamboozled the lower order taking a further 3 wickets. Nick came on and took the last 2 wickets in 7 balls as Chappel finished on 151 all out. A good performance in the field with the only blemishes Louis and Craig dropping a catch each. Perhaps the Perrin boys could join the Wareing brothers for extra fielding sessions.

152 to get in 51 overs seems straightforward but at a ground that previously has seen a top score of only 124-5 it could be a tricky chase. Craig (9) got a shooter and Jake (1) soon followed. Rich looked like he had lady luck on his side after being dropped twice, but he couldn't make it pay as he was out for 12 in the 13th over. 42-3 became 54-4 as Matt (10) fell after looking in good touch. Louis stood firm with Simon and the runs flowed but Louis (24) was then caught and Simon (22) got a dreadful LBW decison to put the game back in the balance at 93-6. Pip was watchful and with the rate required never a problem he could play risk free shots. A few overs went by without much happening when suddenly Pip was bowled. 108-7 advantage Chappel. The new bat, Rob, joined his younger brother at the wicket needing 43 in 24 overs. With time not an issue the Wareing pairing picked up any single available and punished anything loose. Matt was the more aggressive but Rob guided the winning run to third man in a match winning patnership of 43. Matt 25* and Rob 12* showed that patience and calmness on a challenging wicket will bring success. At last the club has two brothers who are decent allrounders.
