Great Bromley and District Cricket Club Saturday XI v Abberton II on Sat 19 May 2012 at 1pm
Great Bromley and District Cricket Club Won by 165 runs
Match report
Matt Wareing is back Baby!
Today we entertained Abberton on a cloudy but thankfully dry day and Matt Wareing was captaining the side for the first time in the absence of club skipper Pip. Matt won the toss and decided to bat, probably because he wanted the game to last beyond tea for which Andy had made 7000 sandwiches accompanied by 1 bag of crisps! The pitch was damp and grassy but played well throughout, well enough to post a total of 286, which was always going to be too many for an inexperienced Abberton side who have struggled for players since many defected last year.
Craig carried on his amazing early season form outscoring liam 3 runs to 1 during the first 15 overs in which he took a particular liking to Mr Elsom's succulent pies, hitting 2 sixes over the pavillion. Liam was starved of the strike to be fair to him and could only look on as Craig creamed the bowling to all parts. When finally he was lucky enough to face Fray Bentos Elsom, his eyes lit up, he cracked the full toss on offer but didnt see the man on the boundary and was caught. hows your luck? Enough of all this big hitting, time for Louis! From 105-1 to 262-2, a fine partnership was built of which Louis scored 47. Craig's immense innings ended looking for another big shot which, for almost the first time he mis-timed and was caught at deep gully. Louis fell immediately afterwards leaving Liam H and Matt Pirie to dawdle some singles to take the score to 286-3.
Now it was Matty's time. Matty, who last week dropped a catch that was 'dollier' than a bag full of dolly mixtures being carried by Barbie! He was on a mission to make amends. He took the first wicket to fall, bowling Johnson off an inside edge 'IM BACK BABY' he strutted. Matt this is Abberton 2nds! Harry then quickly took the second with a surprise straight one. These wickets disguised the fact that we were off the boil generally in the field perhaps knowing the game was ours without too much effort being needed. Matt completed a hat-trick of straight bowled victims but was trying too hard to bowl fast and never found a consistant line. Pete and Rob were the pick of the bowlers in the middle overs simply by putting the ball in the right spot. 53-3 soon became 80-8, Robs figures of 3 for 10 from five, give him a seasons tally of 7 for 51 and an economy rate of 2.48 runs per over. Pretty impressive. Less impressive was the hissy fit he threw when Matt took him off to give others a bowl. With the game already won this was the mature choice but Rob sulked for England. There's no I in team Rob but there is in D**KHEAD! :-)
With only 10 players to bat due to Gallants injury, sustained whilst dropping a catch earlier, there was only one more wicket to take but Captain Paget was going to make us work for it. 15 more overs it took before Louis finally tempted Pagets partner Desborough to leave his ground and Craig took a smart stumping. A convincing win but im not sure ive ever been so bored in a game of cricket before. Tougher games ahead but 3 wins out of 3 so far. Well done Matty..baby
