Great Bromley and District Cricket Club Saturday XI v Harwich & Dovercourt on Sat 21 Apr 2012 at 1pm
Great Bromley and District Cricket Club Won by 135 runs

Match report A new season and a match that marked the beginning of a new era, The first under the captaincy of Pip Allam. It also marked the Saturday debut of Liam Holyman. Pip having been Sunday captain for so many years and Liam also being a Sunday regular, both slotted into their positions like they had always been there.
Harwich were our opponents and despite a week of persistant showers the game got under way on time. Liam Fisher was back opening the batting with Craig and he started the season with a third ball 6! Harwich's openers Luxford and Rudkin bowled straight and full looking to take advantage of any help from a drying pitch but 31 runs were added in 8 overs without too much alarm before Liam didn't quite get to a drive off Luxford and Armstrong took a decent catch at Gully. 2 balls later and for all Louis' posturing in front of the mirror, his first innings was over, looking to turn a ball to midwicket he could only give a simple return catch to Luxford off a leading edge. Liam H now joined Craig looking to rebuild. That they did and both were looking well set before Liam had a rush of blood allowing Semple to claim his first wicket. This brought Rob to the crease, Rob likes the first day of the season especially against Harwich, he achieved his first and only 69 against them last year! By now Craig was playing with an ease that defied the sticky wicket and cantered to his first half century of 2012 (apart from all those he has in his dreams) Rob on the other hand was making the wicket look treacherous but somehow was surviving, including a confident shout for caught behind. Little did we know that this not out decision would have a bearing on things to come. Craig elegantly moved towards a hundred, Rob threw off his shackles and the pair added 116 before Rob was undone by a beauty from Semple that turned from leg to off, for a hard earned 41. Just 6 overs to go now and 214 on the board. 275 was possible, not for long though as wickets fell too swiftly, Pip was bowled by Good for 4, Craigs magnificent inning was ended by a direct throw from the boundary for 125 (maybe the best innings ive seen him play). 236-6. Nick, still shaking his head in disbelief at a wide not being called then forgot to look up and was bowled by Good for 3. Matt Wareing added a quick 13 and the innings closed at 251-8. Well above par on this wicket.

The Wareing Family tea, chocolate cakes a plenty, 13 on Liam Fishers plate, fed us well before taking the field with fingers crossed that the rain would hold off for 2nd half.

Matt W and Fish were straight on the money, Liam striking first, removing Harman for 4. Matt followed up next over, taking the wicket of Captain Bilton, Harwich's danger man with a beauty that ripped through his stumps. Not to be outdone, Fish then had Good caught behind from a good ball and a good catch. Good stuff! All 3 wickets had been taken off the last ball of an over but Matt couldn't wait that long again as 1st ball of the next he had Moors caught behind off the glove, oh, not out given, never mind next bell he had him plumb LBW, oh FFS!. Here-on-in we struggled to bowl the middle order out, we certainly weren't going to get a decision. In fairness to the umpires they had been sent out despite not knowing the laws so you couldn't really blame them. Chance after chance was created and turned down, frustration was growing. Moors dollied a catch to Fish off Matt Halsey but that only brought in comedy batsman Armstrong who pirouetted his way to 22 runs despite having no discernable talent and being given not out from the thickest edge imaginable, any thicker and he would have middled it! Fox was also riding his luck but at least he had the ability to put away a bad ball and made a creditable 42 (despite being out 3 times). The rain clouds were circling us but somehow play continued and at last the breakthrough came when Liam H took his first wicket for this side, a beauty too, bowled round the legs, only it wasn't Gatting facing but Coco the clown!
With the breakthrough made, wickets tumbled, Harwich going from 104-4 to 116 all out just in time for the rain to find us at last. Just as quickly Harwich had left the ground forgetting to shake hands. Well it is a long way home!

We later found out that we had the only game played in Div 5 so sit proudly on top of the table, Now to stay there.
