Great Bromley and District Cricket Club Saturday XI v Newlands and Northwood on Fri 22 Jul 2011 at 1pm
Great Bromley and District Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets

Match report We were delighted to host North london side Newlands and Northwood on Friday as part of their short tour of North Essex. I was honoured to Captain the Bromley side for only the second time and the weather was kind to us so that everyone enjoyed their day (with the possible exception of Liam Holyman ha ha) Newlands Won the toss, sort of, and had a bat. Guest player Lewis Homewood opened the bowling with Pete and after a couple of quiet overs the first wicket fell, Mymin bowled by Pistol Pete. He followed that up by also hitting Luder's timbers and 25-2 soon became 29-3 as Lance, who had replaced Lewis got in on the act, he then quickly removed Stain and i was already worried this game might end too soon. Sam Day replaced Pete and quickly put an end to my worries! When Richard Hunt took off his gloves to have a bowl we all knew this MUST be a friendly. Sam and Richard enjoyed their chance to turn their arm and each took a wicket. 'Did' Wright also bowled a couple of friendly overs and the score passed 100. Calum, Olly (who bowled off a longer run to great effect) and Liam finished the Newland innings but not before they had made 162. Both sides still in the game. Just as it should be.

Mrs Holymans cakes were the talk of the village, i think it was her cakes they were talking about!!?

Being Captain has its perks, so opening the batting was always an option, Steve Bennington had a grin from ear to ear when i asked him to join me. It was slow going admittedly but we managed to see off one of the opening bowlers before Steve relaxed and missed a straight one, LBW for Mymins first of three victims. Lewis joined me and the rate improved to a massive 3 an over before i got carried away and missed an attempted pull. 27 though, im pleased with that. Richard Hunt was also pleased, the last time he batted higher than 11 was when the team only had 10 players! 2 runs was his second highest score ths season.. Sam got out playing the shot that always gets him out and then Pete and Lewis looked untroubled before Lewis played a rash shot and was bowled for 33. Calum soon looked to take the bowlers on which inspired Pete to have a swing too. He made a sprightly 30 before being the third player clean bowled. Lance by now had ran all Annette's errands and was allowed to bat! He and Cal saw Bromley home adding a smooth 42 in 6 overs and taking us to victory with 6 overs to spare. The result didnt really matter as the game itself was the winner. The sun was now out and the bbq was burning, the beer was soon to flow. A lovely day, hopefully we can do the same next year.
