Great Bromley and District Cricket Club Saturday XI v Brightlingsea II on Sat 17 Sep 2011 at 12:30pm
Great Bromley and District Cricket Club Won by 239 runs

Match report And so to the final game of the season against local rivals Brightlingsea where a little revenge was sought for a defeat at the half way point of the campaign which went a long way to wrecking our promotion hopes. On that day they had put out a side that barely resembled their usual 2nd team but today they arrived with a colts side plus 3.

Nick won the toss and with time required to prepare the tea he decided to have a bat! Craig, a tantilising 26 runs short of the Division 5 batting record paired up once more with his ideal partner, Liam. Both took a while to bed in but Liam crashed 3 boundaries in the 4th over and for 2 or 3 overs the expected fireworks began but there was something not quite right about Craigs batting today, trying to hit balls to parts of the ground that he wouldnt usually consider at this stage of proceedings and it was one such shot that brought his demise, hoiking a ball from outside off stump only to send it high into the air where Homewood gratefully accepted the catch. Craig scored 24 and fell despairingly 2 short of the record. Next year mate. Liam was playing his standard up and at em innings but it was cut short by an exellent catch at short mid-wicket by Bowler ( not THE bowler who would have done mighty well to get to mid-wicket).65-2 and not what was hoped for against this attack. Jack was promoted up the order and sent out with instructions to bag a maiden half century. Pip joined him to face his beloved spinners! These two added 62, somehow, Jack making the most of his luck and scratchely moving towards the landmark 50. Pip fell for 19, stumpted off tweaker Homewood which brought Nick to the crease to face his former club for the first time.It very nearly ended as quickly as it began, a ball that lifted higher than expected from Homewood was edged up into the peak of Nick's cap which fell all too close to the stumps. 12 year old George MacDonald tried his hand from the bottom end and achieved the first maiden of the day, its not often you face a ball bowled from below your eyeline! Jack struck 2 successive fours shortly after to bring a well deserved 50 and keep his captain happy although the captain wasn't so pleased 2 balls later as he somehow top edged again this time to be caught at mid-wicket off the bowling of the aforementioned 12 year old. This brought in another man lifted up the order, Andy, who was determined to make the most of his time in the sun. He did so, handsomely along with Jack and later Rich adding 38 before Jack fell for a career best 84 and then a 6th wicket seasons best partnership of 85 with Rich. Both plundered the boundary boards and 300 was now the target. A flurry of wickets fell at the end all to M.Brown, who despite a groin strain was able to bowl a 7 over spell at the death. To be fair he had little option as 6 young players had bowled their entitled spells. Lance pushed the score past 300 in the final over, 304 the target for Brightlingsea Cadets.

Lance, Pip, Lorraine, Nick, Annette, Tracy, Matt Wareing and a cuddly toy prepared the teas and between them it worked out well. The Brightlingsea players enjoyed it so much they were too full to take their plates back up!

Lance and Rob opened the bowling, oh no sorry Lance and Liam opened the bowling and it wasnt long before both found their lines. 12 runs were made through the slip area before Bowler played a Craigesque shot straight to Nick at Mid-on. One senior player down, 1 to go! Lance followed up his opening wicket by having Homewood caught behind to a ball that did just enough to find the edge. Liam, meanwhile was having liitle luck from the bottom end despite bowling as well as he does on his good days and today was certainly one of those. His bad luck didnt last and a full toss bought an end To R MacDonalds innings, Rob taking his hands out of his pockets just quick enough to take the catch. Now it was just a question of time how quickly the remaining wickets would fall but with the rain also falling it was important to keep the intensity up. Liam was on a roll now and quickly had Mike Brown caught. Finally a slip catch was taken. For Fish's next 2 wickets he didnt require any assistance as Jake Brown and English were clean bowled. He wrapped up a 5 for by having Jasper caught behind. Brightlingsea infants were now 7 down and only a shade past 50. Matt Foley and Rob were introduced to knock out the tail but here lies the main event of the day. Matt had Cardy-Harvey stumped and Rob took the wicket of Bees, well caught by Nick before the defiant Dowman was joined by MacDonald junior, all 4 feet of him. Nick had a word with Rob to make sure the bowling was full but very next ball one popped off a length and hit the youngster on the forearm. As he winced, several players checked his welfare only to be joined by the lads Father who was hell bent on retribution. All hell broke loose as arms, threats and phlegm were thrown in the Bromley players direction. Richard Hunt did an admiral job in restraining the intruder but the game ended amid disgraceful scenes the like of which is expected more at a football match. The youngsters of Brightlingsea behaved impeccably but the same can't be said for 1 or 2 others and it will be hard to imagine how this damage can be repaired, but lets hope sense takes over and that Brightlingsea act with dignity so that bridges can be remade.

The game became a secondary issue but for the record a 239 run victory showed the gap between the sides.

Some of the seasons stats now, Bromley ended 4th in the table, a dissapointment but much is already expected of next years side. We scored more runs than any other team in the league but failed in some games to set a challenging total, Matt Wareings 38 wickets and Craig's 927 runs were the stand out performers but Rich (568), Liam (263) and Louis(313) all scored consistant runs and Matt Wareing had by far his best season with the bat totaling 329. Jack (161) ad Nick (154) also chipped in but it was our failure to support Matts efforts that cost us dear. Louis and Fish 17 wickets each were the nearest challengers then Lance( who only played towards the back end of the season) and rarely seen Rob both took 10 , A spinner is a priority for next season or maybe even 2!!

The leading batting partnerships are as follows;

1st wicket Craig and Rich 263 versus Bury (a)
2nd wicket Rich and Rob 145 v Harwich (h)
3rd Wicket Jack and Pip 62 v Brightlingsea (h)
4th Wicket Louis and Jack 67 v Brightlingsea (a)
5th Wicket Craig and Nick 47 v Mildenhall (h)
6th Wicket Andy and Rich 85 v Brightlingsea (h)
7th Wicket Nick and Lance 64 v Bury (h)
8th Wicket Nick and Pete 24 v Mildenhall (a)
9th Wicket Nick and Adam 28 v Maldon (a)
10th Wicket Louis and Andy 31 v Kelvedon (a)
