Maldon II v Great Bromley and District Cricket Club Saturday XI on Sat 13 Aug 2011 at 1pm
Great Bromley and District Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets

Match report First of all a mention for our cricket week that finished yesterday. Let down by a team pulling out of wednesday's game we quickly cobbled together 2 teams and had a very entertaining 2 innings T20 bash which was enjoyed by all. Thursdays game was washed out by heavy rain but not before Jake and Louis were teeing off to some effect against Elmstead. That brings us to Chairmans day and our now traditional clash with Springfield. Lance and Annette had spent months planning this day and it went off in style, with help from all the committee and extra helpers such as Fiona, Lorraine and Carly it is hard to imagine how it could be bettered although we are sure to try. Well done to everyone involved and thanks To Springfield who once again played a great match scoring 261-7 in 52 overs before declaring giving us a massive 37 overs to chase!! we fell just 6 runs short with Guest player Tom Allison top scoring with 60 odd. Nick And Matt Foley couldn't quite hit the boundaries required at the end but an honourable draw seemed fair all round. Great Stuff.

As for today, we travelled to Maldon 2nds, a few of us still with sore heads and bodies from the week. A strange looking wicket but one we would of batted on had Louis won the toss, he didnt but we were put into bat anyway. Rob had another go at opening, alongside Craig. The first 3 overs were maidens but Rob had been dropped twice in that time but it was soon to be 3rd time lucky as his attempted drive didnt have the elevation to beat Punchart at Mid-off. That was a blow but nothing like as much as when Craig departed soon after, mis-timing an on-side drive which again found Puncharts hands. 19-2 and with our weakened line-up a large total was now a tall order. Louis and Jack steadied the ship, Jack playing some glorious square drive/ cut type things! Louis was being more watchful but together they added 46 before Jack edged behind for 27. Nick, who by batting at no5 showed the length of our tail joined his Skipper and took time to access the proceedings, 19 balls in fact before getting off the mark. 18 year old J Barrett had taken Jack's wicket and he followed it up by claiming the remaining prize scalp of Louis, who made 29 in 56 balls. Barrett finished his 7 over spell taking 2-17, ah by heres a thing, he didnt finish his spell. His competitive captain decided he would despense with the rules and keep his young tyro going. it worked if you think winning a match is more important than a young mans development or the integrity of the game? Barrett bowled very well in his 15 overs claiming 5 middle order wickets to leave us 124-7. Nick was still going though, entrenching himself and taking some painful blows along the way including a hit in the mid-rift which caused him lob his bat half way down the wicket! Adam became a useful ally to Nick and the pair added 29 for the 9th wicket before Nick's defiance ended when a wide ball defeated his advance down the wicket to have him stumped last ball of the innings. He deserved a not out.

No crisps at tea. criminal.

We felt 153 might give us a chance if we bowled and fielded smartly. Unfortunately we didn't quite reach the standard required, too many short balls gave Maildon easy runs. Rob did claim the early wicket of Coker, well caught by Craig at short leg. Gozzett(very decent bloke) and Punchart took the score to 58 before Rob claimed his second wicket, bowling Gozzett for 31. It was the next partnership which took the game away from us adding another 57 runs before 'one shot' Punchart finally fell LBW to Lance again for 31. Lance had had him plumb two overs earlier and the umpire gave this one through guilt.. Discreditted skipper Collins fell into our Captains trap by hitting Andy straight to long off and Raymond only made 2 but by now Maldon were less than 10 from their target and Ellis had completed a well made half century, Foster hit the winning runs and with 10 overs to spare, Maldon were worthy winners. Shame that the rule breaking wasn't as worthy.
