Boxted v Great Bromley and District Cricket Club Saturday XI on Mon 30 May 2011 at 1pm
Great Bromley and District Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets
Match report
Boxted, we really owed them one. The 2 games against them last year couldn't have gone much worse for us. First was the away game where Louis had inserted them on the hottest day of the year only for him and Joe to get injured bowling and we spent the first half of the game chasing the ball to the boundary, or in Jordans case walking to the boundary! Then there was the home game where Mike Booker.. hes not a looker, gave our batting order a going over and we were all out for 80 odd.
Would today be different? After the excellent performance against Maldon on Saturday, Louis was keen to use the same tactic and bowl first. Louis' record for winning the toss is amazing, he must have won 75% of them over the last couple of years, He really is a great tosser.
So we bowled first and Matt and Pete hit their straps striaght away, Matt once again bowling some fine deliveries without joy. Pete was the first to strike no doubt helped by the pressure the batsman felt under from facing Matt. Evans LBW to the 2nd good shout. Matt then bowled Happy Rishworth with a pearler that ripped out leg stump. Rishworth was so miffed he went home. He returned later, his mood hadnt improved. Pete then took the prize wicket of Khaira to a catch behind, A very uncharacteristic shot from the accomplished batsman. The next wicket to fall was a comical run out, Pickford hit straight to Nick at mid on who picked up smartly and threw waywardly, Pickford called for a second but this time he was well short as Matt threw in from the boundary. If that was comical it was nothing compared to what happened next, Sexton fended another sharp delivery from Matt straight to Richard at Gully. Richard controlled the ball on his chest before palming it to the ground, In the meantime the batsman called a run, Rich Lawson saw his opportunity, Picking the ball up he ran towards the stumps but then he realised he wouldn't get there so threw to Craig, Well, near to Craig. The batsman got home. Well done the 2 Richards or should i say the 2 Dicks! Louis and Olly shared 3 wickets and Jimmy got in on the act with his first senior wicket but the final wicket summed up Matt's bowling, A snorter thet cut back, caught the glove and Craig took a fine diving catch. 149 all out. A top effort.
Olly opened up again with Craig and he looked a lot more at home than the Maldon game, playing a couple of lovely shots before being brilliantly caught by Pickford for 12. Craig was looking in majestic form, feeding off anything short. Rich joined him and these two looked totally at ease until Craig guided a delivery from Khaira between the keeper and gully. Harris, diving full length to his left took another amazing catch. He was as surprised as anyone! Matt W was promoted to no4 and again looked good but his weakness is playing back to length balls and he fell plumb LBW. 3 wickets down but only 75 required with Rich set, shouldnt be a problem? But this is Bromley we are talking about and Louis soon departed. Nick hung around for a while in support of Rich and we edged to within 40. Khaira produced a beauty to skittle Nick and then bowled Jimmy for 1. 6 down. Pete hit a six and got out bt then you probably knew that. Enter Sam. He looked a lot more confident than we felt and 2 boundaries were met with rapturous applause. Rich meanwhile was serene, calmly pinching singles and the odd 2. Sam hit the winning run and Rich was left 49 not out (the second 49 of the game after Pearces in the Boxted innings)Sam had come of age and this little cameo will do his confidence no harm at all.
And so a little bit of revenge dealt out but this was a tight game played in very good spirits and another 20 points.
