Great Bromley and District Cricket Club Saturday XI v Mildenhall III on Sat 07 May 2011 at 1pm
Great Bromley and District Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets
Match report
In a week when the club mourned the passing of President and Lifelong stalwart Phil Allam it seems appropriate to write a more sombre match report. The committee decided in the week that the game should carry on (with advice from Phil's family) and a minutes silence was observed in his honour and Black armbands were worn in his memory. A lovely man, a Cricket man and Family man who will be sadly missed.
Despite forecasts of showers the game was played in fine sunshine once again. We batted first hoping to continue our good form. Craig was accompanied by Louis who promoted himself to open. His form of 0,1 and 3 didnt suggest it was waranted but Louis' view was that he wanted to get striaght out in the middle and find some form. The move was partially successful, after a scratchy start Lou began to play some fluent shots and a 50 opeming stand was achieved. All was going well until Louis inexplicably called for a run which was never there and his good work was undone. He made 27 though and his confidence boosted. Rich, a bit miffed at dropping below Louis (So was Adam come to that) showed us how an opener plays, 13 dots in 19 balls!. The opening bowlers by now had departed and a much more miserly pair in M Kingdom and C Reeve were operating in tandem. The run rate slowed but 9 wickets were in hand so no panic. At 21 overs gone the score was 74 and Captain Handy (sound like a charactor from a 70s cartoon) decided he would look to take a wicket by bringing on a partnership breaker, himself ! The next four overs went for 40 and the Bromley wheels were turning again. Rich then made his only mistake Chipping Chipchases slow turners to mid off for 43. He and Craig had put on 98. Craig and Matt Wareing put on 1. Matt was the plumest of plum pies. Olly made a spritely 13 (unlucky for him) and when Nick joined Craig, who by now was marching towards three figures (again) there were 8 overs remaining. No further wickets fell and Craig made a hard working 113*, not his most fluid innings but another of supreme concentration. Nick was 16 n.o The total 230-4. Something to defend.
The wright's teas were made of the wright stuff, the Srawberries appropriate for the summers feel in the weather.
Mildenhall, in reply went of like a train, Off-colour Openers Matt and Matt but not Matt (Wake) were being bullied. Matt Halsey took a blow at 2 overs for 30, not like him at all. Matt Wareing did have Captain Handy castled for 13 (off just 6 balls) but Taylor kept the scoreboard ticking. Olly then had Saunders, LBW for 26 and despite collectively going at nearly 10 an over at least wickets had fallen. Rich then took a typically smart catch at slip to dismiss Taylor but the score had propelled to 115-3 in just 15 overs. The bowling and fielding was very un-Bromley like, no-one was having a good day in the field. Giffin and Hunt continued the onslaught adding 83 in quick time. Louis tried all he could to change the course of the game, Adam Cuthbert bowled a fine little spell but the damage was done, Mildenhall reached their target with 10 overs to spare. They had deserved to win. Captain Handy had skippered his fleet well and they batted our bowlers off their rythem. A reminder that there are tough teams in this league and we must not be complacent. Roll on next Saturday and Goodbye Phil, god bless.
