Great Bromley and District Cricket Club Saturday XI v Harwich & Dovercourt on Sat 23 Apr 2011 at 1pm
Great Bromley and District Cricket Club Won by 109 runs

Match report An unseasonably sunny day greeted the teams for the first match of the 2011 campaign and our local rivals Harwich were the opponents. The Perrins were sunning themselves at daddies expense so Nick stood in for his first experience as Capitano. The first victory was the toss and its traditional to bat first in these conditions so thats what we did. Nick pulled a rabbit out of the hat by asking Rob to open with Liam, his instructions were to see out 15 overs. Unfortunately he forgot to mention this to Liam, who failed to last 15 balls, 5 to be precise before slicing a catch for the first Mallard of the season. Rich joined Rob and was straight in the swing of things, pulling and driving effectively. 79 runs were achieved in only 10 overs and Rob was keeping pace, gloriously driving C Shulka over his head on several occasions. The scoring rate got even better, 168 after 20. Rob had gone by this time lasting 1 more over than the captain called for and scoring 69 (Theres a first time for everything) well constructed runs. He was still dissapointed in getting out though and Rich reminded him later that a real opener would have carried it to a hundred. He was able to say this as thats exactly what he did, making a fantastic 108 off just 81 balls and setting a platform for a mammoth total,or at least thats what we thought. Adam Cuthbert was having none of this malarky, the pocket sized batsman defended beautifully, for 33 minutes infact before pushing a 2 through cover. Scoring runs clearly affected his concentration because 2 balls later he was out bowled! Seriously though, Adam has improved his technique hugely since last i saw him bat and when his strength develops, his scoring shots will surely follow. Matt Wareing now needed to shore up the batting, as from 200-4 we had sunk to 230-7, Nick and Jack falling cheaply. Andy Struck 3 bounderies in an over before sweeping Armstrong and missing. Pete played a few of his short arm hoiks to add 14 and when No 11 Richard joined Matt we had slumped to 270-9. Matt felt it was time to open up. He ran down the pitch to Armstrong and swung hard, so hard in fact that the breeze could be felt on the boundary, the ball though, wasnt affected ,it carried serenely on to hit the stumps and end the innings at 271 all out. Perhaps it should have been 371 but still a defendable total.

Mrs Nick's tea was as glorious as the sunshine but now her husbands work was about to be done.

The Wareings opened up and Skipper Poole and Swisher King were the opening batsman. Matt and Rob were battling to see who could get the angriest and Matt won this hands down, skipper had a word! Matt did make the first breakthrough, bowling King who had frustrated both bowlers with industrial tekkers! Rudkin had been promoted to 3, his bowling days restricted by a back problem, he also frustrated the bowlers in making 23 before the reliable Pete bowled him. Rob bowled 9 steady overs but couldnt add to his earlier joy. Nick asked Pete to swap ends and protect the short boundary, he did this and more by removing opener Poole and reducing Harwich to 84-3. By now the required run rate had reached nearly 8 and the game was slipping away from the visitors. Rory Harmen was oblivious to this, he had watched Adam earlier and was jealous. He came to the crease with the score at 75 after 20 overs, when he was the 9th wicket to fall the score was 149 from 38 overs, his contribution...2. Well played young man, Adam, eat your heart out. Nick was having a fantastic time, every time he changed a bowler a wicket would fall. Greg Waltham, on debut, made his first contribution (after an earlier duck) by taking the wicket of A Shukla and showed some promising signs, if only his executive job in Argos wolud allow.. counter number 1 please! Andy swept up the last two wickets in double quick time helped by the excellent wicket keeping of Richard, who had a great game behind the timbers. Add this to a fiery spell and 2 wickets for Fish to complete a perfect day for the stand in Skip. Louis watch out!
