Ipswich ll v Great Bromley and District Cricket Club Saturday XI on Sat 04 Sep 2010 at 12.30 pm
Great Bromley and District Cricket Club Lost by 1 wicket
Match report
Gt Bromley went into this game with still an outside chance of promotion. They would have to do it the hard way as, after 2 victories over sides above us in the last 2 games, the two remaining games were against the top two sides starting with top of the table Ipswich today. We made short work of beating these at home but we were a without one or two key players today. Once again we batted first and got off to a bit of a flyer, Joe enjoying his chance to open again but with 29 on the board, 1st team bowler Bell got one through Joes defences for the opening wicket. Louis and Craig took the score past 50 mainly thanks to some fine strokes from Craig who looked back in prime touch. Louis only made 5 but had helped take the score to 65 and after only 15 overs we were looking in a healthy position. Rob and Matt Wareing were 4 and 5 but unlike last week they werent able to hang aroung long but still Craig motored on, bringing up his 50 in the 20th over. Nick was a little unlucky to be caught behind, the ball deflecting off the wicket keepers shoulder who then juggled the ball a further two times before completing the dismissal. Nevertheless we had slumpped to 104-5 and with a long tail. To be fair, Jack, Ben and Olly did all contribute some useful runs but after Craig went for 66 we were never going to get near the 200 that looked par on this pitch. 148 allout and the crime of giving Ipswich 9 overs extra to get the runs, they shouldnt need them.
In recent weeks we have bowled and fielded very well and we would certainly need both aspects of our game to hold up well if we were to stand a chance here.
When the first ball of the innings went through Petes hands for 4 perhaps it was destined not to be our day? Matt W bagged Cook early and he and Rob were in competitive moods and both bowling well. A double wicket maiden in the 8th over brought Rob the first of what was to be 5 wickets on the day and a great start for Bromley. Ipswich did well to keep out the Wareings for the remainder of their spells but more slack fielding including dropped catches was beggining to hamper our chances. Pete and Joe took up the baton and both bowled very well, Pete having Porter caught by Craig in his second over. 56-4. Again more catches went done with Joe, in particular suffering. Ipswich could have been 8 down, instead they went past the half way mark eith 6 wickets in hand. Joe did bowl Oxborrow for a deserved wicket and Ipswich were shaking a little. Rob was re-introduced in the 30th over and immediately took a wicket and a vital one too. The experienced Bell falling for 20.109-6 and the tail to look forward too. That became 7 down in Robs next over in what surely is his best bowling performance of a shortened season? Still needing 39 to win with only 3 wickets remaining, we were now on top and with Matt back on to join his brother you could sense everyone was really up for it. The scoring rate had really dried up only 14 runs coming from 9 overs. If only we had seen out our 45. Rob completed his 5fer but now only 14 were needed. Rob finished with 5 for 42 from 14 excellent overs. Louis came on and soon took the 9th wicket, Gunson, who didnt look like he knew which end of the bat to hold, joined 14 year old Johnson who had already been frustrating the bowlers. 7 runs were still needed but Gunson, to even his own teams amazement cover drove Louis for 4 and then 2 overs later inside edged just past his stumps to bring the winning runs for the home side and now champions. Ipswich's captain gratiously said we were the beat side in the league but thats easy to say when you have just won the league and gained promotion yourself, that is now out of reach for us. Today could have been so different, poor batting was followed by even worse fielding. Our bowling though was first class.Still plenty of positives to take forward and Div 5 beware in 2011.
