Mildenhall lll v Great Bromley and District Cricket Club Saturday XI on Sat 21 Aug 2010 at 1 pm
Great Bromley and District Cricket Club Won by 29 runs

Match report On a breezy late summers day, Gt Bromley made the epic journey to Mildenhall for a mid-table clash. Mid-table they may be but both sides still stood an outside chance of promotion but the loser here could kiss goodbye to that for another year. Mildenhall`s A pitch is glorious with its huge outfield and manicured square. We played on the B pitch! It was a difficult decision on winning the toss with its damp looking pitch and overgrown outfield but Louis stuck to the tried and tested formula and batted. That is despite the appaling showing against Boxted last up. Bromley had something to prove.
The skipper looked to Jack to open with Craig but when he turned him down, Louis had to opt for Joe. Neither opener was able to assert any authority on proceedings early on, the wicket was sticky and timing was tough. Joe survived a mix up with Craig when there were more yeahs and no`s than Vicky Pollard sentence! It wasnt until the tenth over when Joe came alive, smashing a huge six off Coverdale and when in the next over he hit an extra cover drive so violently that the fielder nearby didnt put out a hand for fear of decapitation. Earlier, Joe had chipped a shot up to mid-off where the lady fielder decided to head it for four! She took it like a man though. The excitement wasnt to last, Joe played at a wide and toe-ended it to Cover. Louis also found the going tough but hung aroung long enough to put on 80 for the second wicket but he too had just come to terms with the conditions when he misjudged a slow ball from Thurston and was bowled. Louis refused to believe it despite the bails going missing! Craig, once again was holding fort, even hitting a striaght six in a rare moment of aggression but when he fell for 58 it was to start a cooolapse. Jack, Matt W and Olly all showing some nievety and getting themselves out. 137-3 becoming 159-6. Rich( retuning from a nightmare 5 weeks without cricket ) and Nick steadied things again and put on 39 in 5 overs before Rich`s sexy cameo ended on 42. 213-8, probably above par for the conditions.

Guess what? Another Div5 Stodger opened the batting in the shape of P Thurston and along with the more purposful Saunders set about target. Saunders had hit 2 quick boundaries and in attempting another, didnt quite get the height to beat an excellent one handed catch by Jack, made even more special by the fact he wasnt looking at the ball at the time! This was to set the tone for some wonderful catches that were to follow. Ward was bowled by Matt Wareing without scoring and he followed it up by having the angry Taylor brilliantly caught by Rodney at slip. The two Matts once again getting important early breakthroughs. Senior Thurston was joined by junior Thurston and they put on 46 for the fourth wicket before Nick took another decent catch to relieve the tedium of the elder statesmens innings. 18 from the first 75 runs tells its own story. Ben Gallifant playing in only his second game took his first wicket for the club when he bowled a good length ball to have Palmer caught behind for 1. 77 for 5, Bromley well on top. Skipper Lou Handy, a seasoned campaigner looked to batten down the hatches but took the opportunity to hit several short balls from the slow to learn Ben to the boundary. 18 coming from one over from the frustrated youngster, Galli did though take the wicket of junior Thurston taken by another good catch, this time by Joe. 90-6 and cruising or so it seemed. Bromleys superb fieling was covering the cracks of some average bowling and a 45 run partnership between Smith and Handy was handy for Mildenhall and kept them in the game. Louis took the prize wicket of the hosts captain, his wickedly diguised slower ball(!) catching the batsman out and Ben was handily placed to take the catch. Surely game over, oh no not yet as Coverdale joined Smith and initially looked like a walking wicket but when he hit Lou for 6 things started to get a bit dicey. 38 runs were added and only 30 required with plenty of time but Louis finally deceived Coverdale and he was bowled. Smith knew Mildenhalls hopes rested on him but the pressue told and Rich Trotter took another great low catch to seal the game. Catches certainly do, win matches.
