Hadleigh ll v Great Bromley and District Cricket Club Saturday XI on Sat 26 Jun 2010 at 1 pm
Great Bromley and District Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets
Match report
A glorious day and glorious surroundings at Hadleigh for this difficult fixture. Hadleigh riding high in the league would prove a real test for the improving Gt Bromley. Louis lost the toss and clearly there was no choice but to bat first for Hadleighs skipper. Bromley opened With the 2 Matts, Wareing and Bieber! These two 15/16 year olds are a joy to watch, they dont just have potential they are a real threat here and now. Matt Wareing was to strike the early blows taking 2 wickets in 2 overs to leave the hosts 17-2. Justin Halsey then bowled Smyth and Hadleigh were really struggling. At the 20 over point they were 39-3, Louis continuing the tight work of his young prodigies, Joe joined the fun by taking the 4th wicket and Bromley were dreaming of an early tea. Tampion and Wiles set about the repair job like master craftsman, Slowly and methodically they eased the score towards 100 and some respectability. When Wiles was out he had occupied the crease for 26 overs for 29 runs, even slower than Louis at Abberton!! Matt W took that wicket and then Ambrose in the same over, 93-6. Tampion knew he was Hadleighs last chance of making a challenging total and began to open up, another wicket fell bringing Gladwell to the crease and he and Tampion added some much needed runs before Matt Wareing claimed his first ever senior 5 wicket haul by taking the scalp of Tampion for a defiant 52. Hadleigh saw out the remaining overs and will be pleased to have reached 163 after their poor start but surely this was 40 below par?
Craig and Liam went off like a raging bull in reply, 59 coming off 7 overs (Hadleigh had taken 26 to get here) both batsman crashing 2 6s each, Liam smashing one so far out the ground we had to send for a sniffer dog to retrieve it! With exactly 100 required in 37 overs Liam was the first wicket to fall, When Joe followed shortly after no-one was too worried it should be a cake walk. What followed was a collapse of epic proportions, from 63-1 to 118-8. no-one from number 3 to number 9 made more than 7 and its one of those things best forgotten. The good news was that Craig was still there, Bromleys rock. 47 runs still required though and, no offense but only Andy (garden knome)Fowles and Matt (Mildenhall) Halsey to come. Craig was in his element, pushing singles here and there, no risks, Andy playing immaculate forward defences mixed with heart in mouth drives. Tampion and Gladwell had shared the 8 wickets and Tampion was still posing a threat. In 20 scoring shots Craig gathered 18 singles each one nudging us nearer to victory. Meanwhile Andy smashing the ball in the way only Andy knows how to, Tampion Bowled out his 15 overs and his departure ended the Hadleigh chances. Andy Fowles played an immense innings, this may only be local cricket but with the situation he came in at and after all the so called batsman had crumbled above him, his effort cannot be under played. He is my new hero. Tampion will look back and think, that 50 runs and 4-47 would gain him the man of the match honours but not today, Craig, once again showing temperament that defies his lack of intelligence for a brilliant match winning 74 not out and vital victory
